World markets higher on improving US jobs data (AP)

July 7th, 2011

BEIJING – World markets moved higher Friday following a Wall Street rally spurred by an unexpectedly strong U.S. jobs report and a rebound in retail sales.

Oil prices hovered below $99 a barrel in Asia amid signs of a strengthening U.S. economy. In currencies, the dollar was higher against the euro but dropped against the yen.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.7 percent to close at 10,137.73, while China’s Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.1 percent to 2,797.77. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index added 0.9 percent to 22,726.4.

In Europe, London’s FTSE opened up 0.9 percent at 6,054.55. Germany’s DAX added 0.4 percent to 7,501.8 and France’s CAC-40 gained 0.3 to 3,991.98. Wall Street was also poised for a slightly higher opening. Dow Jones industrial futures rose narrowly to 12,690 while S&P 500 futures were unchanged at 1,351.70.

The gains came after private payrolls firm ADP reported U.S. companies added more jobs in June than expected and weekly jobless claims were below forecasts. That helped to ease fears about the monthly U.S. Labor Department employment report due out Friday and seen as the most reliable gauge of job creation.

Traders were cautious as they watched for the official U.S. data, said market strategist Ben Potter at IG Markets in Melbourne.

“There’s been a big rally in markets over the last 10 days,” he said. “A fair bit of good news has been priced in already, so a few people could be looking to take some profits ahead of tonight’s data.”

South Korea’s Kospi was unchanged at 2,180.35. Sydney and Singapore also gained while Taiwan’s Taiex and India’s Sensex both were off 0.3 percent.

Oil-related shares bounced higher following the rise in crude prices. PetroChina Ltd., the publicly traded unit of China’s biggest oil and gas company, gained 2.1 percent, while China National Offshore Oil Corp., known as CNOOC, rose 2 percent. Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. was 1.7 percent higher.

But what’s good for oil companies weighed on airlines, whose profits are reduced by higher fuel costs. Korean Air Lines Co. was down 2.5 percent and rival Asiana Airlines Inc. plunged 3.3 percent. Air China Ltd. lost 1.7 percent.

Mainland Chinese shares were mixed, with financial and military-related shares led gains while new energy companies weakened. Industrial Bank Co. gained 3.3 percent while BYD lost 1.6 percent.

The Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.1 percent to 2,797.77, while the Shenzhen Composite Index was virtually flat at 1,201.50.

Concern over Chinese data due out Saturday that are expected to show June inflation rising above 6 percent had little impact following this week’s rate hike, said Hu Yi, an analyst at Jianyin Securities.

The main economic data, including consumer price and producer price will be released on July 9.

The rally in global stock markets bolstered hopes the economic recovery was gaining steam, which helped to boost resource and mining shares. China’s Zijin Mining Group rose 1.7 percent, while Energy Resources of Australia shot up 2.1 percent.

Retailers in Asia followed their American counterparts up. Japan’s Fast Retailing Co. rose 1.6 percent, while Australian retailer Woolworths Ltd. gained 0.4 percent. On Thursday, U.S. retailers reported their best June sales results since 1999.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.7 percent to close at 12,719.49 on Thursday. The Standard and Poor’s 500 index added 1.1 percent to 1,353.22. The Nasdaq composite closed at 2,872.66 after gaining 1.4 percent.

The rally came on the heels of what appears to be an improving job market. The number of people who made first-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped last week to a seven-week low, the government reported.

Payroll processor Automatic Data Processing said companies added 157,000 employees in June. That was more than double the number economists had forecast and far more than the 36,000 added the previous month.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was down 4 cents to $98.63 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose $2.02 to settle at $98.67 on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude fell 72 cents to $117.87 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

In currencies, the euro dropped to $1.4287 from $1.4351 in late trading Thursday in New York. The dollar gained to 81.35 from 81.30 yen.

Sebi allows FIIs to invest additional $20 bn in infra bonds

July 7th, 2011

New Delhi: Capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Thursday hiked the FII limit for investment in bonds, issued by infrastructure companies, to $25 billion from $5 billion.

This would increase the total limit available to foreign institutional investors (FIIs) for investment in corporate bonds to $40 billion.

The minimum tenor of the investment in listed corporate bonds would be 5 years. “These investments are now permissible in unlisted instruments,” Sebi said in a statement.

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget speech for 2011-12 had proposed raising the FII investment limit for investment in corporate bonds of infra companies, taking the total limit available to FIIs for investment in corporate bonds to $40 billion.

But the FII investment in unlisted bonds shall locked for three years, the statement added.

“During the lock-in period, FIIs will be allowed to trade among themselves. Durin

Kass: Today’s Broken Clock?

July 6th, 2011

I’m not sure whether he actually believes what he wrote, whether he actually acts on his own recommendations or whether sounding bearish alarms at Cramer’s TheStreet.com is just his role but the more Doug Kass says, the less credible he seems to be and the less respect I have for him as a prognosticator.

I base this view on a recent piece on theStreet.com entitled “Kass: Apocalypse Here?”, Kass’s second call about the market topping out or, in his words “A week ago, I wrote a column, “Apocalypse Soon,” which outlined, in a comprehensive way, the ingredients for a market fall.” In his RealMoney Silver trading diary (also on theStreet.com) he wrote that a market correction loomed ever closer.

AmEx Gets With Social Networking In Foursquare Partnership But Stock Is Plump Enough

July 6th, 2011

American Express is expanding its partnership with foursquare across the country after a successful pilot program. The new partnership will allow users to link an American Express card with their Foursquare account allowing users to take advantage of special offers by paying with their AmEx cards.

While we don’t expect it to impact the shares immediately, it provides an attractive platform that reaches young buyers that use Foursquare and so could increase card membership or attract users away from competitors like Visa and MasterCard that are more widely available. I
